Sometimes it's the little things that makes you remember a town fondly... The Woolgate Centre and the Woolgate carpark were great joint achievements of the District Council and commercial enterprise. It's a great thing for visitors to see that blue plaque on the Woolgate wall in memory of a council planner, Ben Webster. What a mark of private and public co-operation!

You can judge a small town in several ways... One is the quality of the public buildings. The outside of the Corn Exchange is magnificent. What pride in place they must have had to build this in the 1860s, in a town of only 5000!

There's been talk of signage in Witney to help visitors to the town. There's signage that tells you what you are looking at, and signage that tells you which way to go. Neither should be overbearing and detract from the view. Here's a 'mock' carved stone plaque that was used some years ago during Heritage Open Days. It tells a story in a traditional and low-key way. Maybe something like this could be installed on selected buildings?

Witney has some wonderful 'small views' that speak a lot about the nature of the town... The view up Gloucester Place from the High Street, for instance. Magic!

What a terrific High Street Witney has... stretching from the posh Church Green outside St Mary's, down to the old commercial section by the river, and up again to Woodgreen. All of life is on this single stretch of streets one leading on to the other!
